How to Build an Essential-Loads List for Home Battery Backup

An essential-load list makes a battery recommendation much more accurate than a monthly electricity bill alone. Begin with the circuits that must continue during an outage, then record their power and operating time.

Separate continuous and intermittent loads

Internet equipment may run continuously, while refrigeration cycles on and off. Record measured daily energy where available. Multiplying a compressor’s nameplate watts by 24 hours can overstate typical use; ignoring starting demand can understate required inverter power.

Use a simple worksheet

For each appliance, record running watts, expected hours, starting demand and priority. Add watts multiplied by hours to calculate daily Wh, then divide by 1,000 for kWh. Keep any unmeasured estimate clearly labelled.

Choose a load-shedding rule

Decide which loads can be turned off as SOC falls. A separate essential-load panel or approved control strategy can preserve energy for critical circuits. An installer must confirm circuit separation and the backup transfer arrangement.
