Overnight consumption is a useful starting point for solar self-consumption sizing. The most helpful data separates daytime demand, solar exports and consumption after sunset rather than reporting only a daily total.
Collect representative days
Use available interval-meter or inverter data from weekdays, weekends and different weather conditions. Mark unusual days such as holidays or unusually heavy heating use. A single sunny afternoon is not a reliable annual design basis.
Look for the smaller constraint
A battery cannot routinely store more than the available surplus, and storing energy that is never used adds little value. Compare evening demand with solar surplus after daytime loads. Seasonal variation can change which side limits useful capacity.
Work through one example
If exports average 9 kWh on the days studied and evening loads need 7 kWh, a nominal 10.24 kWh battery is a candidate for further review. The final choice depends on usable capacity, reserve, charging time and losses. If winter exports fall substantially, the same daily result should not be assumed.
